dear mr. bartlett,
what paul is putting out here is for any human being to think he can be right with god by his own works, not realizing how short all his works fall from what is required to have that life with god in eternity. paul is revealing mankind’s need for jesus to fill that shortfall.
the falling from grace is not that man does what god instructs him to do but of believing what he does all by himself is good enough, his rejection of jesus’ atoning sacrifice to pay for all of his shortfall once and for all.
