Was repentance that John the Baptist called for, only relevant until the cross?
Is it still relevant today for being sorry for our behaviour that is not in unity?
Well Vicki, that is a good question. Repentance was a doctrine under the Old Covenant. It was a doctrine of Christ. In other words, it was a doctrine practiced by the Jews awaiting the Christ to come. Now that the New Covenant has been established by Christ, we are told in Hebrews to forsake the doctrine of Christ. In Hebrews 6:1-2 it says, “Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.”
Christ has come, that doctrine has been fulfilled and we are now in an everlasting covenant of peace and grace.
